ISSUES RELATING TO COMPETITION LAWS

New Zealand has a variety of consumer protection laws, including the Fair Trading Act 1986, the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, and the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment administers these laws. The Commerce Commission is responsible for enforcing the Fair Trading Act 1986 and the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003 (consumers must themselves enforce their rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, before the Disputes Tribunal). More information about these laws is available on the Ministry website, at www.mbie.govt.nz/info-services/consumer-protection

The Trade and Regulatory Cooperation Team of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment provides policy advice to the New Zealand government on trade remedies matters. It also administers trade remedies legislation, which enables anti-dumping and countervailing duties and safeguard measures to be imposed where imported goods are being dumped or subsidised, or where there is a sudden surge in imported goods, which cause injury to a New Zealand industry. Consult the trade remedies page of the Ministry website for further information: www.mbie.govt.nz/info-services/business/trade-tariffs/trade-remedies
