ISSUES RELATING TO COMPETITION LAWS

New Zealand has a variety of consumer protection laws, including the Fair Trading Act, the Hire Purchase Act, and the Layby Sales Act. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs administers them. The Ministry's web site, http://www.consumer-ministry.govt.nz, contains details of these Acts. The Commerce Commission is responsible for enforcing the Fair Trading Act.

The Trade Remedies Group of the Regulatory and Competition Policy Branch of the Ministry of Economic Development provides policy advice to the New Zealand government on trade remedies matters. It administers trade remedies legislation, which enables remedies such as anti-dumping and countervailing duties to be used where imported goods are being dumped or subsidised. Consult the web page of the Trade Remedies Group http://www.med.govt.nz/buslt/trade_rem.html for a fuller explanation of their role within the Ministry of Economic Development.
