Competition Policies/Laws

Malaysia

Even though we do not have a Competition Act, Malaysia will continue to enhance the competitive environment in the Asia-Pacific Region by drawing up adequate competition policy to address problems posed by unethical trade practices and abuse of market power. This will be done with a view towards ensuring legislative transparency and the promotion of cooperation among APEC economic, besides accelerating output and economic growth. We will continually review existing competition policy to identify areas where changes are needed and such changes which can bring improvement to the nation will be implemented.

The benefits of introducing a Competition Law shall be carefully weighed to accommodate the developmental needs of the nation and to ensure that such a law is not used to the unfair benefit of any international body or any developed country. Malaysia shall strive to obtain workable competition. This may be achieved by way of legislation or by policy invocation. A vigorous and effective trade policy may well provide the best alternative for promoting the economic efficiency of the country as a whole.
